Hello
I'm a vary happy Mac Pro owner (MacPro3,1 8 [email protected]). I use it for numerical simulations (Computational Fluid Dynamics and Mesoscale Simulations) and it has been and excellent machine, scaling impeccably for parallel computations and solid has a rock (typical uptime of 2 months because I like to make some updates once in a while).
I confess, I'm not a usual at the Apple Store, and one of this days I went there and I didn't saw hexa cores for sale. Is this correct? After realizing that the machines for sale where Nehalem's I also missed the 3.3GHz cores for 2 quad configuration. Is this also correct?
My wish:
Could anyone please help me and describe the present/nearly future in terms of Mac Pro hardware? I need to buy two more machines (preferably two 2X6 core machines) to be operational in mid September.
Thanks for your time
- Select the Seagate drive on the left that shows the capacity 3. Select the Partition tab on the right hand side of the Disk Utility Window 4. Select Partition Layout and select 1 partition 5. Next to name you will see untitled 1 where you can name the drive. This will be the name shown when the drive mounts. Change Format to Mac OS.
- Seagate internal drives must be formatted before use. Drives that will be bootable are formatted during the process of installing the operating system (ie, Windows or macOS). If you have a drive that is formatted for a different type of computer or a drive that is not preformatted, you will need to format the drive before you can use it.
- For my 100th post, I have a few questions with regards to the entire Mac-PPC/Win-x86 argument Let's start from the following assumptions, both Mac's and Win's boxes do approximately the same thing.
You may want to build a PC.
There was no dual 3.3, and Apple is amiss and behind and upsetting a lot of users with not getting out Gulftown/32nm Nehalem.
Actually, Intel roadmap for Xeon is best seen on Wikipedia.
I don't really think 10.6 is well married to current processors with hyper-threading though, maybe they'll catch up to Windows 7 and the help Intel's compilers offer.
I would also think multiple GTX 480s in SLI would benefit if you can use CUDA.
The Mac Pro is based on Intel Skulltrail platform of course, yours Skulltrail 2. eVGA is ready with their own SR2: support for dual Xeons, 4 x SLI and 12 DIMMs for 48GB.

Nothing you asked is 'off the reservation' and it is quite common.

Hello all!
I may be buying a mac pro in a month or so and have a few questions about it.
1. ) Any one know when Apple may release the latest mac pro? Don't wanna buy some thing that'll be significantly obsolete in a few days
2. ) Is it possible to use SATA optical drives internally? I have a SATA blu ray drive I'd like to take from my PC, if that's possible.
3. ) Is it possible to get a graphics cards better than the 8800 GT for video games? (For use in OS X)
4. ) Finally, is there a significant performance difference between Apple's seemingly super expensive RAM and 3rd party RAM? (Other than the heat syncs)
Thanks for any replies.1. We have no idea when Apple will release any product until it's released. This is a user-to-user site so we have no more information about future products than you do.
2. Yes, it's possible. There are two additional SATA ports on the motherboard.
3. The only graphic cards are those provided by Apple when you order the computer as well as the non-Apple supplied ATI HD-3870 Mac/PC card. The 8800 and 3870 have close performance specs. You can find some benchmarks at Bare Feats.
4. There's no difference between the RAM Apple installs and what you can purchase on the open market. As long as the RAM meets the required specifications and has the requisite heat sink it will work just fine.I am a recent convert from PC and I had a Dell system that had two Nvidia Cards in it, but I could not use each one to run one monitor because it was SLI and it could only clone my screen and not extend it. So I had to plug both monitors into one card, and I basically paid for one card that I never really used since I wanted two monitors.
I have two monitors hooked to my new Mac Pro, and my question is if I put in another Nvidia GT120 will each GPU run one monitor, and will they run as one big desktop just they way I have it set up now. Plus is there any benefit to having the dual GPU? I work on documentary videos and I use Adobe Creative Suite a lot. Will having the dual GPU speed up things like After Effects and Premiere. I know snow Leopard will help some, but in the mean time will an extra GPU help any?As Hatter said, you can drive 2 monitors from 1 video card on the Mac. SLI/Crossfire doesn't work under OSX, so unless you need to run more than 2 monitors, there's no need to have more than 1 video card...
And I wouldn't say you got no use out of the 2nd video card in your dell. If you were gaming at all, you were probably getting better performance using the SLI than you would have gotten with just 1 card.
So, yes, under OSX, you can drive 2 monitors with the 1 card and it will let you either clone the desktop on to both displays (both show the same thing) OR stretch the display so the desktop stretches across both displays...
I'll be doing this with my mac pro to drive 3 monitors (using a 2nd video card)... Which should give me a HUGE desktop (I can't describe how much nicer it is to have tons of desktop space when programming or doing video editing...)Yes, I know I should ask this to Apple's sales department, but I'd rather ask users of this computer first.
I am aware that all MP come with the Intel Xeon 64-bit chip, but what I need to know is, does that mean I could run the 64-bit version of Windows Vista then too?
Also, any 'hidden problems' with this computer, such as graphic card lockups (like in the iMac) or any other problems that I should be aware of?
Thanks,
DanThe 64-bit version of Vista requires the drivers to be authorized and approved by Microsoft before Vista will allow you to install them. If the drivers you are trying to install have not been OK'd by Microsoft (and are on their trusted list), you can not install them. Vista will point blank refuse.
I tried a Vista 64-bit install (not on my Macs). The motherboard & graphics card came with 64-bit drivers etc so all worked fine, until I wanted my peripherals to install, some manufacturers did have 64-bit drivers, the majority however didn't, so reformat and back to 32-bit Vista on that machine. That is why it is the 32-bit OEM version of Vista that is pre-installed on computers out there than the 64-bit version. (Only the Ultimate* version of Vista comes pre-packaged with both the 32 & 64-bit discs you need, all other versions are 32-bit with a link to a web site address to order the 64-bit disc from Microsoft for the cost of postage).
* I think that in itself says everything, when most people will be buying a non Ultimate version.
Now that I have installed Leopard on a stand alone machine I have a side by side comparison between both OS's and Leopard wins, hands down. Vista looks so, well. . . antiquated by comparison.
As for Mac Pro's, I have the nVidia Quadro FX 4500 in my Mac Pro and it runs beautifully. Combine that with Leopard and I am one happy bunny :o) boing boingHi,
I am trying to determine my Mac model so I can use the table in this article to identify which versions of Windows I can install.
But on my Mac Pro, 'About This Mac' shows something called 'Model identifier' as 'MacPro1,1' which does not match any of the Mac models listed in this article. How do I identify my Mac Pro model in terms of year of manufacture as shown in this article?
Any help on this would be gratefully appreciated.
Regards GordonHi,
Thanks for the quick response. I am currently running Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit version via Boot Camp with no problems. But if you are correct about my Mac Pro model and the table in the article is also correct then I should not be able to run this version of Windows.
The question now is should I reinstall my previous version of Windows i.e. Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit version or stick with Windows 7?
Thanks GordonHi,
Unfortunately I don't have so much money to spend but I find Apple products very high quality and in same time very expensive, specially for my country (Russia), according to statistic, it’s less then 1% of people that using Mac Pro in here, my country really poor :/
I never use Mac before, but I think that time is come and I would like to buy one on my birthday soon (22 November). I really tired of my crazy PC with Vista, it’s always bugs lags, and so on, it’s poor machine. I can buy new PC with i7, nice performances or buy Mac, but I think, Mac will be more quality and stable.
I'm web designer and programmer and using my PC with Adobe programs, normally Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, very rare with After Effect (1 day per month). Sometimes I’m playing games like Dragon Age or CS:Source, Starcraft2. But I got PS3, but unfortunately it’s connected to our main home TV, and I can’t play PS3 because all day this TV watching my family :/ lol
I’m not sure if there are any way to connect PS3 to TV and computer screen at the same time… but it’s another question.
Now about Mac I'm wondering of buying cheapest Mac Pro 2010:
# One 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon “Nehalem”
# 3GB (3x1GB)
# 1TB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s hard drive
# ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB
# One 18x SuperDrive
But at the same time, I wondering about how long time I will be able to use this Mac, and enjoy it before it will come too old. Because I just can’t spend and buy Mac every 2-3 years.
I’m looking forward to use it for 4-5 years I think or so. I know it’s very hard question and I’m not really sure if it’s right to discuss it, but I’m saying just what I think.
And maybe because of this, it’s better to order processor with 3.2Ghz, and a bit more RAM (8GB (4x2GB))? What you think?
And what will be the different between this 2 processors and more RAM? Because it will be +800 USD or so, and it’s very expensive for me (pay addition 800 Dollars), I just want to ask you if it will costs this money. Unfortunately I can’t spend more money on Mac to buy 6-core Westmare and more RAM But I think cheapest Mac, for my tasks already very powerful and awesome, what you think?
And if you’ll advice me, not to pay addition 400 USD for +0.4Ghz, and the different is very little, then what you think about addition Ram for stock MAC?Thank you hatter.
I'm appreciate for your help and answer, and this amazing links! They are very helpful.
I find some interesting information. And most interesting is SSD thing. But unfortunately it's very expensive for me

And I’m not really sure, if they offer high quality components, and I can’t check it.
I just don’t want to repeat same experience like with my previous computer – I bought top computer for very high price with top components, but everything was bugging, it’s terrible, I’m working with this computer 3 years now (it’s cored 2 duo with radeon x1900 and vista :S video card - without supporting DX10-11, 2 Hdd 500Gb RAID 0, - maximum lags – I cant’ even make a diagnostics… crazy). Maybe I want to much :/Hello, I have a simple question about mounting volumes on start up.
My computer wakes up auto - and then auto there are serveral applescript tasks (mount and start up programs)
I use this script (daily) for serveral connections with external volumes I always need the connect to. ( In the script I use this code 3 times for other locations) I do this on start up.
set Uname to 'XXX'
set Pword to 'XXX'
set someVolume to 'afp://XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX/XXX/XXX
mount volume someVolume as user name Uname with password Pword
(same code for 2 other locations)
When i do this on start up sometimes the script says there is no connection possible. I guess it's because on start up the connection isn't there. And 1 minute later when computer is total ready the connection is ok. When I run the script then It works. Just sometimes ( In the morning) 'It' want to connect but the script stops. When i do it manually(I run the script again) it works just fine.
Is it possible that I need a delay? Can someone explain this?
How would I make a delay handler for this script? Is that the best solution?
Thanks in advance. This is something small i'm wondering about.
ColinBTW, If you saved the script as an application +(and not as an application bundle)+ you could drop the script on to *Drop Script Backgrounder* (freeware).
Then the script would run in the background, so, you wouldn't see it running in the Finder.

Do Model# ME294LL/A support Arabic language ?Apple US only sells computers with the 'LL/A' suffix. What do you mean by 'support'? With the proper font installed, you can type and download documents in the Arabic language.
Dear All,
Just got a simple question about combo box: I have one of these selectors with labels based on filtered rows from a table.
Is it possible to have one more label that would select all options?
Like:
Product A
Product B
Product C
All Product
Many thanks for your help!
GillesHi Gilles,
The purpose of ComboBox itself to select single option out of many.
For your purpose, you may have to use 'List Builder' which can accomodate 1 or more to select.
Please revert for more clarification if you need.
With best wishes
BaaRaa.Hi! I have a simple question about performance. Suppouse that you have a servlet or a class with DB access, and you need to use a value several times in that page. What is best, to assign the value from say, a resultset or a request.getParameter() to a variable or to call the resultset or the request every time you need to retrieve that value? Which option uses less memory, which is faster, etc.?
Hoping the best fou u
RaulIf you need more values from a db, the best is to open some connections (connection pool) and use the for accessing the db.
To get the data only once, open the connection, get the data, store the data whereever you want: variable (class), hidden control (if you want to send from one page to another by request) and close the connection as quicky as possible.
The advantage of the first method is that the most time consuming activity (connections opening) is done only once.I have a Mac Pro (Model: A1186, EMC: 2113) that I am selling. I need to erase all content and restore to the original settings. This is a work computer and I no longer have the original disk to restore. Is there a way to restore the Mac without the disk?
ThanksNo, you need to have original Install or retail Tiger(10.4.7) disc to restore the system.
As far As I know, only available old OS on disc media for your Mac Pro at Apple Store is Snow Leopard(10.6).
http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopardI'm thinking about getting a mac mini to work with my NAS as a iTunes server. I have a bunch of questions about this. I will have two iPhones, a few iPads, and a laptop that will be accessing the files. I have iTunes match. This is basically to keep an always on computer for hosting the music/movies. My questions are as follows . . .
#1 Are there any good, comprehensive guides to show you how to do this?
#2 Can the movies be accessed when not at home on the shared network?
#3 Can the iPads or the macbook pro download the shared movies to be stored locally?
#4 Back to #3, how will it work on my macbook pro with listening to music (I have iTunes match)? Say i go to library and I break out my macbook pro and I don't have internet. What happens if I download music while at home onto my macbook pro to listen to it when I go to the library? Will i start a new library on my macbook pro? How will that mesh with the home server when I come back.
#5 Is there a way to mirror files or folders? So something that I have on my macbook pro will also mirror on the home server.
Thanks for your help on this. I'll post any follow up questions.seanfenton wrote:
1. I want to replace the Optical drive with a 2TB SATA. can I use this 2.5 inch?
I do not know if it is the same model number, but this one will work in your MBP:
http://eshop.macsales.com/item/SEAGATE%20OWC/ST2000LM003M/
2. I want to replace the HD with a 128GB SSD 840. When I replace these drives, will my OS still be in tact? I have never done this job before.
No. You will have to format the drives in Disk Utility>Erase to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and then install the OSX by using the original install disks.
3.) I want to replace the ram sticks to max capacity. This is 2 2GB sticks, Correct?
No. An early 17' 2008 MBP will accept 6GB RAM with the following specifications: 200-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM. The best sources of Mac compatible RAM are OWC and Crucial.
4.) Most difficult...
I want to extend the monitor wirelessly to a projector. I thought about using Apple TV and Airplay. However, support for airplay is for MacBooks 2011 and newer. I thought of using a PS3 and the media server, but I think this brings on a format compatibility issue. (my library is so large I could not afford to convert all my movies to MP4.) So, how would you recommend I put my extended monitor with VLC player onto a projector?
Could I possibly connect the MBP to a Mac Mini as an extension? would this work natively? I would rather use a VGA cord than F with 3rd party app BS.
Cannot help you there.
5..) I want to Bypass iTunes this time around. I would prefer to use Finder and VLC to manage all of my music. I mostly play all my music on shuffle, so, could I create a playlist on VLC with all of my music and play it randomly? (im sure this is possible but i'd like to organize all my plans with confirmation.)
You are not obligated to use iTunes.
6.) Can i upgrade the keyboard to backlit? i've read that this is possible.
All MBPs have back lighted keyboards. Your either needs a NVRAM reset or a repair.
Ciao.Hi,
I am actually in the process of buying a new Mac Pro and I would like to know if someone here could help me to understand what's going on with the 64 bits mode thing on the mac pro.
I have a mac pro 1,1. Now I am using SL, but ML is out for a while. I use Logic 9 and most of my plugins supports the 64 bits mode, but I am sticked to the 32 bits mode.
First question: Is it right to think that going for 64 bits mode computer now will greatly improve the performances and internal memory management on Logic in 64 bits mode with plugins in 64 bits mode?
Second question: Looking at the wiki page for the mac pro (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mac_Pro#Specifications), I understand that the 5,1 model is fully 64 bits compatible, but what about the 3,1 and 4,1 models? Are they fully 64 bits compatible if they are upgraded to ML? Why is the kernel not 64 bits?
I would like to buy a used mac pro, which would fit better in my budget right now. But, I am looking for better performances and a 64 bits mode of operation, and these are my priorities right now.
Thanks for your time to help me.
MartinYes. And no.
Use all 8 DIMM slots. Result = 17% boost over not.
Use 667MHz 2GB DIMMs = 4% slower (not noticed real world, Barefeats also).
Yes you can't use 8GB DDR3 etc.
I thnk that the issues wtih ML and Lion, the issue witrh some PCIe cards not working, not being bootable, and that it was the first to try to implement the new EFI and SMC in 3 yrs - are bigger issues.
And the cost of system even now is too high without taking into account: RAM, will I need to upgrade the video card it came with? before I can use it.
Yes. Penny wise and pound foolish over 4 yrs old model now (will turn 5 in February) and was first booted by Intel in November 2007.Hello all,
I’ve been searching many forums for the better part of a day trying to get some workflow questions sorted. I’m experiencing (very) slow export times, and mediocre playback for a machine that should be screaming fast.
Here is what I’m working with:
2014 Mac Pro
-2.7 GHz 12-core intel xeon E5
-64GB Ram
-Dual AMD FirePro D700 6GB
-1TB Flash Storage
Editing all footage off 96TB Raid 6 mini-sas server (getting about 1100mbs read/write rate according to AJA system test) which is faster than any Thunderbolt/TB2 drive array I have.
Media I work with is footage from the RED Epic (normally 5K) as well as DSLR footage from the 5d.
Software:
-PrPro CC 2014 (8.1)
-Magic Bullet Looks 2.5.2
My question(s) pertains to RED post-pro workflow in combination with third party plug-ins and the different approaches to make it more efficient.
Right now, majority of the clients need a 1080p HD master, and they are generally anywhere from 2-8 minutes (usually). So my sequence settings are as follows:
Video:
Editing Mode: RED Cinema
Size: 1920 x 1080
Audio: 48Hz
Video Previews
Preview File Format: I-Frame Only MPEG
Codec: MPEG I-Frame
1920x1080
Maximum Bit Depth unchecked
Maximum Render Quality unchecked
Composite in Linear Color checked
Export Settings
H.264
1920x1080
VBR 1 pass
Target Bitrate 12mbs
Max bitrate 12mbs
Maximum render quality/depth/previews unchecked
Issues I have:
-Playback is fine at 1/2 or even full, but once effects (especially magic bullet looks) start to go on the clips, it’s very choppy and has difficult playback at 1/4
-Export times (especially with magic bullet looks) will take the better part of 1-4 hours for a video that is 3-6 minutes long. This doesn’t seem like it should be the case for a maxed out MacPro
So my questions are:
Do these seem like the right sequence/export settings for mastering at 1080p? If not, what would you suggest?
Would using offline editing help at all?
Do you place your effects on adjustment layers?
Is there anyway to improve export settings when using an array of filters?
Have you stopped using third party plugins for their inefficiency in unreliability and switched to more integrated applications like SpeedGrade?
Is there any other tweaks that you would suggest for RED workflow with PrPro?
Should I consider switching to FCPX or (besides the iMovie-likeness) does it carry problems of its own?Hi This Is Ironclad,

The biggest issue is that most people have is that updating OS X causes certain folders to be set to Read Only. See this blog post: Premiere Pro CC, CC 2014, or 2014.1 freezing on startup or crashing while working (Mac OS X 10.9, and later).

It's a nice base system. How about an additional speedy disk for media cache files. You also did not mention which version of OS X you are running.

The Red Giant website does not indicate that this software is yet updated to work with Premiere Pro CC 2014.1 (8.1). Proceed with caution here.

I would not use this plug-in until you get the OK from the manufacturer.

Again, I suspect your plug-in.
Keep in mind that exports are largely CPU based but you can make sure that GPU acceleration is enabled for AME at the bottom of the Queue panel.

No need when you should be able to edit natively. Relinking might also be an issue.

Do you place your effects on adjustment layers?
That's one way you can do it with the benefit of being more organized.

Have you stopped using third party plugins for their inefficiency in unreliability and switched to more integrated applications like SpeedGrade?
I do. Of course, that's a preference.

Is there any other tweaks that you would suggest for RED workflow with PrPro?
Try the following:
Sign out from Creative Cloud, restart Premiere Pro, then sign in
Update any GPU drivers
Trash preferences
Ensure Adobe preference files are set to read/write(Hopefully you checked this out already)
Delete media cache
Remove plug-ins
If you have AMD GPUs, make sure CUDA is not installed
Repair permissions
Disconnect any third party hardware
If you have a CUDA GPU, ensure that the Mercury Playback Engine is set to CUDA, not OpenCLYou have AMD GPUs.
Disable App Nap
Reboot

Should I consider switching to FCPX or (besides the iMovie-likeness) does it carry problems of its own?
I really shouldn't answer that question.
Hope this helps.

Kevin1.) How could I Update my Bios? I find the zip- File but no further Information how it works?
2.) I want to update for more memory. 2GB are less for fast working. Where could I find Informations about the memory controller- e.g. Voltage, Timings... for pass new memory of 4GB.
3.) My PSSD1E shows me in Windows7 - Systems Hardware one empty SATA- Controller.
Is it possible to take it optional for an outgoing connection- eg SATA-OUT for extrenal device?
Sorry for my worst english.Satellite Pro L300 is offered with several different hardware configurations. I dont know which one do you have and there is no sense to discuss about this without exact notebook info.
If you want to have general conversation here than dont claim about this forum.
To get some precise answers inform us about exact notebook model.
One more time:
1
For all new notebook models Toshiba offers Win update only. That means BIOS update can be done under running operating system. For more details check Toshiba document.
2
What you need is just part number of compatible RAM modules. All other information is not so relevant for you. If you want to get this info post exact notebook model.
You can test what you want but fact is that Toshiba offers list of compatible RAMs you can use with your notebook. All listed RAMs are tested. Other way you can visit KINGSTON page to check their list of compatible models for different Toshiba notebook models. Kingston offers high quality products and all listed RAMs are tested too.
Who knows which RAMs you have used for your tests? Maybe some cheap no-name products. Many people have used such RAMs and at the end nothing worked.

Why you complicate the whole situation? For external devices you have available ports. For internal device you have ports on the motherboard. End of the story.
And yes, visit your local dealer ant talk with him, especially about question number 3.

Format Seagate Drive For Mac
Any brand in particular that are reliable? I am currently using WD
Passport drives, have 4 now, lost one early this year. Am more redundant
nowadays.
For that reason, I use two separate drives for Time Machine and
Carbon Copy Cloner.
From E.T.'s Keyboard. . .
I have seen the truth and it makes no sense.
